Representation and inclusivity are at the heart of a more equitable society, yet many overlook the power of pronouns. According to a recent Forbes survey, nearly 31% of Gen Z identifies as part of the LGBTQIA+ community (Kratz, 2024). Yet, unfortunately, misgendering—intentional or accidental—happens every day.
This article explores why pronouns matter, how to use them effectively as an ally, and how cultural perspectives shape gender identity.
By understanding and respecting personal pronouns, we take an essential step toward fostering a more inclusive world.
1. Why do pronouns matter?
First and foremost, using the correct personal pronouns is a form of respect.
Actively choosing to avoid nuanced pronoun usage can hinder an inclusive environment, particularly for intersex transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming individuals (Pronouns.org, n.d.).

2. How to normalize the usage of pronouns, as an ally.
A great way to normalize pronoun usage is by incorporating them into introductions.
For example, "Hi, I'm Pietro, and my pronouns are he/him." This simple yet meaningful action sets a positive example that not only normalizes sharing pronouns but also encourages others to do the same, creating a chain reaction and making spaces more inclusive.
Consider these additional strategies:
Promote awareness initiatives: Classrooms and workplaces can integrate conversations on pronoun awareness. This can help reduce the stigma surrounding the topic and make it easier for people to share their pronouns without fear of judgment.
Encourage pronoun-sharing in group settings: Adding pronouns on your badge beside your name provides visual cues to help others quickly and easily identify and use the correct pronouns.
Respect and adapt: When someone shares their pronouns with you, make an effort to remember and use them correctly. If you make a mistake, apologize, correct yourself, and move forward. It's all part of the learning process!
3. What to avoid when using pronouns.
One of the most important considerations in inclusive communication is not making assumptions about someone’s pronouns. If you do not know someone’s pronouns, it is recommended to use their name instead or ask politely. When unsure, gender-neutral language is an excellent alternative.
Inclusive Language Tips:
Use “everyone/all/y’all” (instead of ladies/gentlemen),
Say “partner” (instead of boyfriend/girlfriend/wife/husband),
Use “they” (instead of he/she), “folks” (instead of you guys/ladies), and “person” (instead of man/woman).
These small shifts in language create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all.
4. Cultural considerations in pronoun use.
Pronoun use varies across cultures and languages, shaping how gender identity is expressed and understood. For example:
Some languages, such as Bengali and Farsi, include gender-neutral pronouns.
In contrast, American Sign Language does not use gendered pronouns.
Some Indigenous North American cultures celebrate Two-Spirit individuals and respect the use of multiple pronouns.
Cultural awareness is key when discussing gender identity. In clinical or professional settings, it’s important to acknowledge how language and culture influence an individual’s relationship with pronouns (Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, n.d.).
5. In conclusion: the power of pronouns in creating inclusive spaces
Sharing pronouns is a simple yet powerful way to contribute to a more inclusive and respectful world. By normalizing this practice, we create environments where individuals of all gender identities feel acknowledged and accepted. As we continue to navigate a diverse and evolving society, embracing and respecting pronouns is a step towards building bridges of understanding and fostering a sense of unity.
